Brief description

Polymer-based materials are extremely important in medicine and medical technology. In the dental sector, they are used as composites for fillings and veneers, as denture material, for plastic teeth and as impression material. Students who have successfully completed this module have a sound, application-ready knowledge of the polymer materials used in the dental sector, their composition, properties and processing.

Teaching and learning outcomes

1 Chemical structure, composition, properties and indications of:

1.1 Direct composites for dental applications
1.2 Indirect composites for dental applications
1.3 Denture materials
1.4 Dental adhesives and other luting materials
1.5 Impression materials
1.6 Thermoplastics for dental applications
1.7 Polymers for 3D printing

2. Selected examples of testing and analysis of polymer dental materials

Recommended prior knowledge

The module assumes basic knowledge of the fundamentals of chemical materials science as acquired in introductory modules on chemistry and materials technology.

The following basic literature is recommended:

C. E. Mortimer, U. Müller, Das Basiswissen der Chemie, Thieme Verlag, 13. Auflage, 2019

Knowledge Broadening

Students will be able to categorize the most important polymer materials in the dental field. They can give examples of polymers for different applications and describe their basic composition, essential material properties and associated analysis methods. Prosthetic materials. Students know the essential properties of polyelectrolytes and adhesives.

Knowledge deepening

Students can relate the structure of polymer materials to their properties.

Knowledge Understanding

Students will be able to evaluate and comment on the use of polymer materials in dental technology on the basis of their current specialist knowledge.

Application and Transfer

Students will be able to discuss the selection of polymer materials for different applications in dental technology on the basis of criteria.
